So. What has been happening lately, you ask? It's simple really. Simple because not that much that is actually news about idlesoft happens.
Surely, ChaosR has been busy optimizing the top menu (the topmost one) even further than his original sneaky fix that wasn't really reported here (meaning the menu is actually centered properly now, there was some fuss over it originally). Looking at the post time, politeness dictates I don't phone him right now to ask him what is up in his menu, but there exists no doubt that it will one day be reported on this very page.
In other news, the programming forums are finally seeing some activity again, even though the other forums are dying their customary seasonal deaths under the non-stress of most of the usual sparring partners not bothering to post anymore.
With some luck, actual progress will be made soon in the hosting department - a contact has been secured that supposedly regularly requires new hosting. Only time will tell.
Of course all the respective owners are working on their own stuff, but the current slightly shared project is seeing tickles of activity every now and then. Even if it's not from everyone. Yes, that was purposefully vague. Corporate secrets!
If, after reading this, you require some additional feed for your hungry synapses, go somewhere useful.
News!
Well, as exciting as the topic title is, there's not much of it. The Flamewar forums are still the most popular part of the site (by far) and we've (not) been communicating like we normally do(n't) around here.
It must be said, however, that Eddie managed to "release Hubroid 0.2.1 to the Android Market and SlideME" as he's very excitedly told me. There's also a twitter feed, which probably hasn't been mentioned in the news before (and if it has, this is some healthy redundancy). Of course, there's not much on the feed yet, but I'm sure our digital community executing director will fill it up quite nicely over the coming months. It's also following each of our twitter feeds, so you can easily click through to my very exciting (but lately slightly inert) feed, or one of the other two fine choices, each of which reflect the personality of the person behind it in the way only lines of text 140 characters long can.
Alas, the short list of items has run out. The wait is on for the next bi-weekly(ish) news post!
New year!
It's 2010 and we've (actually, that's just me) decided to throw regular ((bi)weekly) news updates into the mix. Only time will tell if that much actually happens around here. Maybe if the flamewar forum is included in the news, communities do love their flames.
ChaosR has committed himself (once again!) to speeding up the site before updating it. Our Yslow scores have gone up significantly, which is good because... ChaosR is planning a complete overhaul! To clarify, this is the kind of overhaul that makes things better, faster and above all: Squeaky clean. The update will be called (surprise!) isn5.0.
Furthermore, some ideas are in the pipeline concerning a source of regular income for idlesoft (and more importantly: it's shareholders). Ideas have ranged from games to pins for google maps (which was dismissed, rest assured), but they're kind of stuck at games (well, the good ones have been - so far). Hopefully we can roll out something cool within a reasonable timeframe (zanzibar, automated! Stay tuned).
The web IRC was fixed, in case anyone noticed the short time in which it was broken. ChaosR has worked some really cool magic on the IRCd (written in Ruby and speedy to boot!).
Excuse our Idleness...
Seeing as the last news post was made back in May, I thought I'd give everyone an update as to what is going on.
ChaosR has disappeared somewhere, and he's probably being forced to stay there against his will and create some spectacularly evil Ruby script.
Disregarding my imagination, we are still here and active, just not in the way we had hoped. Various projects are on the back-burner due to our extreme laziness, like an improved web hosting service, for instance.
So, what have we done since the last post? Well, on the server end, we have dumped cPanel for Virtualmin, as it is much more cost-effective for our purposes (it's free! =D). ChaosR has been working on a special project which I'm not too sure I should talk about, but seeing as it's on IdleCode I suppose I can tell you: it's an IRC server written in Ruby. I made it crash fantastically a few days ago, so I don't think it's ready for public release just yet.
Meanwhile, I have been occupied with school and now that Winter/Holiday/Christmas/Milk/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa break is here, I thought it would be a good chance to work on some things. I've been thinking about a new version of the website, ISn5. The plan is to keep it simple, with two main colors: white and blue. The current theme is based off WicketPixie, a WordPress theme which I personally maintain and develop (you can find it on IdleCode, as well).
Lastly, Krageon is... still Krageon.
That's about it, be sure to check back in another 7 months for our next news post!
...
That 7 months thing was a joke.
Update
Just so you know we aren't pushing daisies quite yet, a small news flash:
The hosting section was updated to define the new policy, and there should be increased business activity over the coming month as my [krageon] other responsibilities lessen.
New and exciting things are brewing in ChaosR's head as well! Stay tuned for cold, hard facts.
Also note the completely revamped theme, which was mentioned earlier, but never got quite the credit that it deserved.
